How to disable conversation view in the Yahoo! Mail Android app

By default, the Yahoo! Mail app for Android devices uses conversation view, where messages between the same people on the same subject are grouped together.  If you like conversation view, that's great.  If you don't, then disabling it is easy enough:

- Open the Yahoo! Mail app.
- Tap the Menu icon in the upper left corner (the 3 horizontal bars).
- Tap Settings.
- Tap the slide bar next to Conversations.  It should turn from on to off.

How to switch to Yahoo Mail Basic

Yahoo Mail running too slow?  Don't like the Archive button where the Delete button used to be?  You can switch to Yahoo Mail Basic for a faster (but less robust) email experience.

- In the upper right corner of the mail screen, hover over the gear icon (to the right of your name).
- Select Settings.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the Settings modal anBasic.
d next to "Mail version" select
- Click Save.

Yahoo Mail will reload with a faster, simpler interface.  The Delete button will be back where it used to be, the Archive button will be gone, and everything should load faster.  One drawback to using the Yahoo Mail basic version is that you can't select multiple emails at a time by using SHIFT -- though you can still do it using CTRL.

If you ever want to switch back to the newer, full-featured Yahoo Mail, simply click the "Switch to the newest Yahoo Mail" link in the upper right right area of the screen.  You'll immediately notice the difference in speed upon switching back.

Yahoo Mail archive button removal extension now available in Chrome Web Store

Yahoo! recently rolled out a new Archive button on the toolbar in Yahoo! Mail.  The frustrating part for many Yahoo! Mail users is that it took the place of the Delete button, moving the Delete button farther down on the toolbar and causing many people to accidentally archive emails that they wanted to delete.

There is now an extension available in the Chrome Web Store that will get rid of the Archive button and put the Delete button back where you're used to seeing it.  deArchive is free to download and hassle-free to use.  Simply install it and forget about it.

Once you've added it to Chrome, every time you log in to Yahoo! Mail, deArchive will remove the Archive button and replace it with the Delete button.

If you have any issues using deArchive, please leave a comment on this page and I'll try to resolve the issue.  For Yahoo! Mail users that don't use Chrome, you can set deArchive up as a bookmarklet (instructions here) and the only difference is that you'll need to click on it after you log into Yahoo! Mail to run it; it won't run automatically like the extension will.

A version of this extension for Opera will be coming soon.

How to remove the Archive button from Yahoo! Mail

Yahoo! Mail recently introduced its new "archive" feature, which is nothing more than another folder to store messages in.  But for some reason, Yahoo! decided to place the Archive button exactly where the Delete button used to be on the inbox toolbar -- so now when veteran Yahoo! Mail users try to delete an email, they often find themselves archiving it instead.

This adjustment is a minor inconvenience to some, and a major headache to others.  Fortunately, with a little JavaScript, you can remove the Archive button... as well as move the Delete button back to its rightful position.

Setup is just one step -- copy the JavaScript code below and paste it into a new bookmark on your browser's bookmarks bar.  Executing the function is similarly easy -- just log into Yahoo! Mail and click on the bookmark you made.  That's it.

This script runs best as a bookmark, because you can just click it once (after you log into Yahoo! Mail) and not have to execute anything else.  To remove the Archive button and restore the Delete button to its old position, save the following line of code as a bookmark in your web browser (details for how to do that can be found below):

javascript: (function deArchive(){setInterval(function(){document.getElementById('btn-archive').style.display="none";document.getElementById('btn-delete').style.left="-80px";document.getElementById('btn-move').style.left="80px";},400)})();

It's a lot of text, but it's a very small function that runs quickly and loops to keep that pesky Archive button away.  Once you've added it to your bookmarks bar, click on it once you've logged into Yahoo! Mail.  The archive button will disappear, and the Delete button will return to its previous position.  As long as you don't log out of Yahoo! Mail or refresh the page, the setup will remain that way.  (If you do either of those things, simply click the bookmark link to run the function again.)  You can call the bookmark anything you want that's descriptive for you.

This function was made with plenty of help.  Many thanks to AdBlock for helping to target the pesky Archive button, and to The X Trader for providing the idea to loop the function.

To create a new bookmark in Chrome:
- Right click on empty space in the bookmarks bar
- Click on Add Page...
- Next to Name: type the name you want to call your bookmark (ie. "deArchive")
- Next to URL: type (or copy and paste) the JavaScript code above
- Click Save

If you don't see your bookmarks bar in Chrome, press <CTRL> + <SHIFT> + <B> to make it appear.

To create a new bookmark in Firefox:
- Right click on empty space on the bookmarks bar
- Click on New Bookmark...
- Next to Name: type the name you want to call your bookmark
- Next to Location: type (or copy and paste) the JavaScript code above
- Click Add

To create a new bookmark in Safari:
Follow the steps in this article.  In Step #2, where they tell you to drag the website address you want to bookmark, copy and paste the JavaScript code above instead.

Once you've made the new bookmark, you can move it anywhere on the bookmarks bar by dragging and dropping it.

You will need JavaScript enabled in your web browser (which it probably already is) in order for this function to work.  This article will show you how to enable JavaScript in Chrome if you need to.  For other web browsers, see this Microsoft article.

If the Delete or Move buttons are not lined up well on your screen, you can adjust their position by changing the pixel count in the function (currently '-80px' and '80px', respectively).  The buttons as they are now appear reasonably centered on an 11" Chromebook and two 15.9" Windows PCs, but they may appear out of position on a screen with a different pixel count.

UPDATE: For Chrome users, this function is now available as a Chrome extension.  Just install it in your browser and it will automatically run on Yahoo! Mail pages, so you won't have to click anything or even think about it... the Archive button will automatically disappear when you use Yahoo! Mail and the Delete button will be where you're used to seeing it.

A version of this extension will be coming soon for Opera.

How to turn off conversation view in the Yahoo! Mail app for iPad

If you use the Yahoo! Mail app for iPad, you've probably noticed that it defaults to conversation view to display your inbox messages.  In conversation view, emails sent back and forth on the same subject are grouped together, so they only show as one entry by default.  If you want to disable conversation view, so that emails show up individually, you can do so easily:

- In the Yahoo! Mail app, tap the icon in the upper left corner that looks like an avatar of a person (next to the menu icon).
- Tap Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Preferences.
- Tap the slider next to Conversations so that it goes from green (on) to white (off).

What to do if you can't remember your Yahoo! password or security question answer

If you've been locked out of your Yahoo! Mail account, or if you've forgotten both your password and the answer to your security question(s), you can have Yahoo! reset your password so that you can log back in.  The process is very easy to do, and it doesn't take a long time.

Follow these steps to have your Yahoo! password reset:

- Go to the Yahoo! login page (login.yahoo.com).
- Click on the "I can't access my account" link.
- Choose the "I have a problem with my password" option and then click "Next".
- Enter your Yahoo! ID and click "Next".
- Click "Next" again to have a password reset email sent to your alternate email address (part of which will be displayed on the screen).
- Log in to your alternate email account, and when you get the email from Yahoo!, click on the link to reset your password, then create a new password.

How to change your Yahoo! security questions

Yahoo! sometimes uses security questions to verify your identity when you are attempting to access your Yahoo! account.  Security questions can be a good safety measure for your account, but over time the answers may change, or you may just want to use different questions.  Changing your security questions for your Yahoo! account is very easy to do.

First, you'll need to log into Yahoo! Mail.  Once you've logged in, hover over the gear icon in the upper right corner of the Yahoo! Mail page, and select Account Info. (You may be prompted to enter your password again.)  Then click on the Update password-reset info link.

Scroll down to the Secret Questions section and click the link labeled Change questions and answers.  There will be two questions to choose.  (Once you click the link, you won't be able to see what your current questions are.)  For each one, select a question from the drop-down list, then type the answer in the space beneath it.  Answers will not be case sensitive.  Once you have finished, click the Save link underneath the questions.
