How to change the SSID for a Verizon DSL router

When you first set up your Verizon DSL router, it uses a default service set identifier (SSID) or network name made up of letters and numbers.  It's a good practice to change this network name, along with the default username, password, and security key.  To change the SSID on a Verizon DSL router, follow the steps below.

1. Open the Verizon router interface

Open a web browser and navigate to your router's IP address.  If you haven't changed the default IP address, it will probably be 192.168.1.1.  If you have changed the IP address and you aren't sure what it is, you can find it by following the instructions in this post: How to find the IP address of a router.

Once you enter the router's IP address and press <ENTER>, the Verizon router page should load, with the Verizon logo at the top of the screen.

2. Go to Basic Security Settings

There are a row of buttons along the top of the screen.  Click on the Wireless Settings button.  If asked to log in, enter your router's username and password.  By default, these will be "admin" and "password," respectively.

When the Wireless Settings page loads, click on Basic Security Settings on the left side of the page.

3. Change your SSID

There are several settings listed on this page.  The second setting should be the SSID.  To enter a new SSID, delete the one that's there now and type in a new one.  After you've typed it in, scroll down the page and click on the Apply button.  (You may be disconnected from the network for a few moments while the change takes effect.)

After changing the SSID, you'll need to reconnect all of your wireless devices using the new network name.

How to reboot a Verizon DSL wireless router from your computer

Whenever there's a problem with your wireless router, the first step in trying to fix it is often rebooting the router.  If you call Verizon for tech support, that's usually the first thing they'll tell you to do.  You can reboot your Verizon DSL router either by turning it off and then back on or by holding in a reset button (depending on your specific router model) but many people aren't aware that you can also reboot the router remotely -- as long as the router is still functioning on the local network side, to allow a connection from your computer.  (For example, if your Internet connection is down but your local wireless network is okay, you should still be able to access the router from your computer.)

To reboot your Verizon router right from your computer, open a web browser window.  Type the router's IP address into the browser's address bar and press ENTER.  If you don't know your router's IP address, it will often be either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 for smaller networks.  If neither of these work, you can find the router's address (called the gateway address) by using the "ipconfig" command in Windows or DOS, or by printing out a configuration page from a printer connected to the same network.

Once you type in the IP address, the Verizon router configuration page will load.  This will typically be a screen with a reddish-black background and the Verizon logo at the top.  You'll see many different options -- click on Advanced along the bar at the top of the screen.  If you're presented with a warning message asking if you wish to proceed, click Yes.

The list of advanced settings will appear.  Click on Reboot Gateway.  Another confirmation message will be displayed; click OK.  (Before rebooting your router, make sure that no other users or services on your network are currently using the router -- they will lose their connection when you reboot it.)

If you have a password set up for the router, you'll be asked to log in before you can continue.  Enter the router's username and password, then click OK.

A message will be displayed that says "Rebooting Modem Please Wait" or something similar.  Your computer will be disconnected briefly as the router restarts, and then the connection will be reestablished.  This may take a few moments -- the router will need to reload everything it needs and then reassign your computer an IP address.  When the screen switches back to the main Verizon configuration page, your router has been successfully rebooted.  (If it seems to be taking an excessively long time to reload, right click on the page and select either Refresh or Reload, depending on your web browser.)

When setting up scanning to email from a scanner or multifunction device, you'll need to know certain information about your email server.  Depending on the server and the device, the information you'll need will vary.  Below are the SMTP settings for some of the more commonly-used email servers.

When using Yahoo! Mail to send scans, you will have a limit of 500 outbound emails per day.

Default passwords for routers and other network devices

Below is a list of default usernames and passwords for routers, access points, firewalls, and other network devices (including networked cameras).  These usernames and passwords are the defaults used when the router is first taken out of the box, or if you restore the router back to its factory default state.  If your ISP provided your router, it may have a different configuration than that listed below.  This list was compiled from user manuals and from personal experience, not from other websites, and more models will be added as often as possible.

The router brand and model will be listed first, followed by the username and password in this format:

If there is only one field listed for a particular device, then that device uses a password only to login, without a username.  If there is no username or password by default, it will be shown like this:

Default IP addresses for routers and other network devices

Below are the default IP addresses (also called the default gateway or gateway IP address in the case of routers and gateways) for different makes and models of routers, gateways, access points, firewalls, range extenders, and other network devices.  More will be added as I come across them.  (Note: This information is collected directly from user manuals or from personal experience -- not from other websites.)  Most of these routers will have a default subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

If (DHCP) is displayed after a device on this list instead of an IP address, then that device by default is set up to request an IP address from the network's DHCP server; it does not come pre-configured with its own static IP address.

If the device requires a specific port to be typed after the IP address in order to access the device's web interface, that port will be included as well, in the format:

192.168.1.1:8080

where the number after the colon (:) is the port number.

How to change the WEP key on a Verizon DSL router

By default, Verizon DSL wireless routers use WEP encryption to help secure the wireless networks that they manage.  When you set up a Verizon router, it will come with a pre-configured WEP key that will be either 10 or 26 characters long.  You can change this WEP key, both for increased security and also to make it easier to remember, by following the steps below.

Verizon routers, like many other routers, use a browser-based management program that you can log into to make changes to the router's setup.  To access this utility, open a web browser and navigate to the IP address of the router.  By default, the IP address will probably be 192.168.1.1, but if that's not the correct address for your router, then this article will help you find the correct IP address.

Once you type in the router's IP address and press Enter, the Verizon setup page will appear.  On the tab bar across the top of the page, click on Wireless Setup.  A box may pop up asking you for a username and password.  (If you've never changed either of these, the username will probably be "admin" and the password should be "password.")  Type in the username and password and click OK.

After you've successfully logged in, the Wireless Basic Settings page will appear.  Scroll down the page until you see the heading "Select a WEP Key."  Depending on how old your router is, you'll probably be able to choose between a 64-bit WEP key and a 128-bit WEP key.  (Older routers may only support 64-bit WEP keys.)  To toggle between the two choices, use the drop down box under the WEP key heading.  Note that the only difference between a 64-bit key and a 128-bit key is that a 64-bit key is 10 characters long, whereas a 128-bit key is 26 characters long.  The 128-bit key offers greater protection, but it is also harder to remember.

A WEP key can use any digit from 0 to 9, as well as letters from A to F.  It can be all numbers or all letters or a combination of both.  Once you've chosen which type key to use and you have your new key, type it in the box under "Key Code," and write it down somewhere safe.  Then scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the Apply button.  In order for the change to take effect, any devices that are wirelessly connected to the router will be disconnected.

For any computers that have this wireless connection configured on them, the WEP key will have to be updated in the connection's properties in order to reconnect.  The steps for doing so will vary by operating system, but they will generally be similar.
